Home is where our heart is

Minnesota Power's Community Investment Report is an annual special publication recognizing Minnesota Power's investments into the communities we live in and serve. This particular edition was my first-time working on this project. We wanted to achieve a feeling of comfort and warmth, which is where my idea of "Home is Where Our Heart is" came from. To show the reach of our investments, stories were paired with an icon of the state in which a particular event or donation took place and marked the city with a small red heart. To further evoke that hometown feel, I created soft scripted text overlays by hand in Adobe Illustrator.

This piece was entered into Utility Communicators International's Better Communications Competition in 2015 and won First Place in it's category, and went on to win Best in Show in print production overall.

Minnesota Power brochures

Minnesota Power has several generation stations ranging from biomass, to wind, to hydropower. The brochures were outdated and in need of a new, refreshing design. Each subsequent station brochure has followed this design to create a unified series of informative communication for the company.

Rajala Woods Foundation leaflet

A double-sided 5x11 piece to be handed out with white pine seedlings. I wanted to keep the design clean and natural—clean sans serif font, limited earthy color pallet, created very simplified iconography and printed the finished piece on 100% post-consumer recycled cover weight paper. The logo was also designed by me, which you can read a little more about here.

This project is very special to me. It was created for a school project in 2009, but will always be strongly regarded within our family. With the passing of my grandfather in March 2009 I wanted to commemorate him and honor his service in World War II. I entered this piece for consideration in UMD's annual student exhibition. It was accepted into the show and subsequently won the Chancellor's Purchase Award.
